Dr. Ryan’s couples counseling session in New York Magazine

Dr. William Ryan's couples counseling session, as featured in New York MagazineDr. William Ryan was featured in the APR. 1-14, 2019 edition of New York Magazine in their weeklong exploration of marriage entitled Marriage: An Investigation.

This 40-something couple started seeing a therapist a year after they married because they weren’t having much sex. A decade later, they had a three-hour couples counseling session about the same problem with Brooklyn couples therapist William Ryan. Here, excerpts from the conversation.

This snapshot of a couples counseling session reveals the challenges and successes of couples counseling: creating the space to discovers truths about yourself and each other to create clarity and a deeper connection.

Over the course of one couples counseling session with this couple, Dr. Ryan eased Jack and Claire, a couple of 11 years, through difficult topics such as sincerity, hearing each other’s feelings, tracking the cause of patterns that have lasted for years within their relationship, and pushing past blame and misconceptions to find connection and common ground.
